About Us

Elections in Charles City County are governed by the three-member Electoral Board who the Charles City County Circuit Court appoints for three-year terms. Two board members must be of the same political party as the sitting Governor. The third must be of the opposite party. The Board members' terms are staggered so that one expires each year. 

The Electoral Board appoints the General Registrar for a four-year term. While all matters of election fall within the purview of the local electoral board, voter registration is the sole province of the General Registrar. In Charles City County, the General Registrar also provides administrative staff support to the Electoral Board. 

The current General Registrar is DeNay L. Harris.

Our Mission

The Office of the General Registrar and Electoral Board of Charles City County strives to promote the highest level of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth by providing equitable opportunities to register and vote; and by maintaining accurate records relating to voter registration, elections, election officials, and candidates. We are committed to promoting democracy and public trust in our endeavors to ensure fair and impartial elections

Absentee Voting

Beginning July 1, 2020, any registered voter can vote absentee without having to provide a reason or supporting information! Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the Virginia Department of Elections as well as the Charles City County Office of Elections encourages all voters to protect their health and the health of others by voting from home. Every voter that votes absentee by mail is one less voter in line on Election Day, limiting the risk of spreading the virus within the community and protecting those that serve as Officers of Elections at the polls. 

We also offer Curbside Voting for anyone at the Office Elections starting Friday, September 23, 2022, through Saturday, November 5, 2022 for the upcoming November 8, 2022 election. Mail-in ballots for this election will also be available Friday, September 23, 2022, but you can request them online here right now! 

 You can also mail, email, fax, or bring in person this form to request your absentee ballot now: Abesntee Ballot Request Form. The last day to request a mail in Absentee Ballot for this election is Friday, October 28, 2022 by 5pm.


Mailing Your Vote

Notice to voters using US mail service, the USPS delivery standards changed earlier this year. The First-Class delivery went from one to three days to two to five days and Standard delivery is now two to nine days.
